MAKE IT COUNT PHOTO SERIES – CHAD TIM TIM

Throughout 2009, Kirk Dianda filmed and edited MAKE IT COUNT, The Element Story. The documentary is a four-part series, that tells the story of the iconic brand and the people that helped shape what it is today.

Element recently released a 200-page photo book, which includes a DVD of the film too (available at elementskateboards.com). The book is jam-packed with imagery from Element’s 20 years of defining moments, including ads, unseen photos, graphics, and behind the scenes photos from the film.

Throughout the production process, I was lucky enough to travel with Kirk while he interviewed this collection of truly inspiring people and shoot behind the scenes photos.

Here is a selection of photos I took while we interviewed Chad Tim Tim at his house in Long Beach, California.

Chad is a devoted father and committed husband. And this peaceful nature transcends into his skateboarding, with a well-respected career, defined by precision and power.

Check out his latest part from the new Element video series; TRIO by clicking here.

I LIKE BEER!

For all the Aussies out there, you have to check this one out! The Keg Show features some of my Australian favorites; Beci Orpin, Nicholas Chalmers, and CK! The exhibition travels from Byron Bay, Gold Coast, and then to Sydney… It’s gonna be awesome!

On the night of the opening, I will post pictures of my submission for the rest of the world that can’t attend the show.

Throughout the production process, I was lucky enough to travel with Kirk while he interviewed this collection of truly inspiring people and shoot behind the scenes photos.

Last year we travelled to San Francisco to interview Matt Irving. Matt’s relationship with Element is one likened to family, with a long history of collaborations and amazing products. For me, the Delphi board series was one of the coolest things that has ever hit skateboard graphics.

Here are a couple of shots of Matt at home with his wolfie dog, named Captain.

MAKE IT COUNT PHOTO SERIES – AMY PURDY

On a chilly winter day, Kirk and I drove to Lake Tahoe where we met with fellow Element Eden Advocate, Amy Purdy.

Amy is the strongest, most motivated person I’ve met. At the age of 19 she contracted a form of bacterial meningitis that left her in a coma for over three weeks, resulting in the amputation of both of her legs below the knee.

Since then, Amy hasn’t let her life altering circumstances hold her back. Today she is a competitive snowboarder, has a modeling and acting career, she’s a motivational speaker, and also has created the non-profit organization; Adaptive Action Sports, which helps people living with permanent disabilities get involved with action sports like snowboarding and skateboarding.

Just talking to her, brings new inspiration and meaning to life! Here are some photos of Amy in her home in beautiful Lake Tahoe!

MAKE IT COUNT PHOTO SERIES – STEVIE WILLIAMS

Stevie Williams grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and started skating when he was just 11 years old. As a LOVE Park local, he was known for his technical skills, which is how he ended up on Element all the way back in 1992…

Fast forward two decades, and Stevie has taken his experience and knowledge, and turned it into his own empire. Amongst a laundry list of accolades and endorsements, he is also the owner and founder of DGK (Dirty Ghetto Kids) skateboards which is based in Philadelphia.

While Williams was in LA we tracked him down for a quick interview for MIC. I only managed to get one portrait of this busy man but I think this photo captures what an inspiring character Stevie truly is.

POLAROID PORTRAITS

We shot an Element commercial during the week, and by we, I mean a group of  creative rat-bags. The day was long, but was one of the most fun shoots I have ever worked on!

I will post the behind-the-scenes photos when the commercial airs on June 1st, but for now I’ll share the Polaroids portraits I took of each person .

The photo above is the Mr Ryan Dewitt; Element team manager and avid bird watcher.

Everybody knows Kat Von D as the TV celebrity and phenomenal beauty, but  there is a quiet and private Kat that you don’t often see. She’s determined, a super talented illustrator, and a tattooist that can shoot amazing photos. And she even sews beautiful costumes. She is one of  the most passionate and enthusiastic people I have met.

Here are some photos I shot of her working at High Voltage Tattoo, and also during her interview for MAKE IT COUNT.
