Slab City can be found in the Colorado Desert of California. Hundreds of campers use the Slab City site during the winter months. Known as “snowbirds”, they stay only for the winter, before migrating north in the spring to cooler climates.
The temperatures during the summer are hellish, but you can still find a few residence willing to withstand the desert all year round. Slab City is decommissioned and uncontrolled. With no electricity and no running water, there is no charge for parking.
I remember seeing some graffiti on the side of the road stating that Slab City was the last free land in America.
Right next door you can find Salvation Mountain, a small hill, approximately three stories high which is entirely covered in acrylic paint, concrete, and adobe, festooned with Bible verses created by Leonard Knight.
