PAEON

In Greek Mythology, the Peony is named after Paeon. Paeon a student of Asclepius, the god of medicine and healing was instructed to obtain a magical root growing on Mount Olympus that would soothe the pain of women in childbirth. Asclepius became jealous, so Zeus saved Paeon from the wrath of Asclepius by turning him into the peony flower.

CHINELOS

We visited the Swallows Day Parade in San Juan Capistrano over the weekend. The most standout of the parade performers, for me were the Chinelos! The word “chinelos” is derived from the Nahuatl word “zineloquie” which means “disguised”. The dance is one of many to develop after the Spanish conquest as native traditions and rites blended into Christian festivals. This dance developed as a mockery of the Europeans with their fine clothing, beards, fair skin and obnoxious mannerisms. It was so inspiring to see the pride and community of the Mexican people during this parade and the details of the costumes were incredible!

KOZY N DAN STUDIO VISIT

We visited the amazing creative duo, Kozyndan for SHELTERBLACK recently. As a huge fan of their work, this visit was one of the most exciting visits we have ever done! Also, I didn’t think it was possible but, Kozy is seriously cuter in real life!!

The pair have been collaborating on artwork since they met in art class and haven’t stopped since. During our visit we got to peek at paintings and sculptures they have been working on for an upcoming exhibition.

You can see their work at GR2 until September 25th. Go check it out if you live  in Los Angeles.
