Once part of a vast inland sea that millions of years ago covered a major area of Southern California, the endorheic Salton Sea is all that remains today. Located 226 feet (69m) below sea level, the lake lies along the San Andreas Fault, and is saltier than seawater!
In the 1920′s Salton Sea became a popular tourist destination, with lots of water recreation and bird watching. Although the sea remains a major resource for migrating birds today, pollution and the natural progression of a ever increasing salinity has lead to the desertion of areas around the sea… And now it looks like a ghost town.
